The 2009 football season marked the sixth for Murphy as head coach at Helena (Mont.) Capital High School. The Bruins had won seven state championships prior to Murphy taking the position of head coach and he has continued the program’s legendary tradition. This past season Murphy led Helena Capital to a 12-1 record, taking them to the Class AA state championship game. It was the Bruins’ fifth consecutive appearance in the season’s final game in a run that included three state titles (2006-08). Under Murphy’s direction, Helena Capital assembled a state-record 33-game win streak that spanned from 2007 to 2009.
